Union Gospel Mission seeks churches, businesses ready to have “undie” day
Portland, OR- Union Gospel Mission is looking for churches and businesses bold enough to declare “Undie” days and collect new underwear and socks for people who are homeless or in need.
Union Gospel Mission is asking that churches declare Sunday, September 21 as “Undie Sunday” and collect new socks and underwear for men, women and children in need. Businesses are asked to declare Monday, September 22 “Undie Monday” and ask employees to collect new socks and underwear.
The underwear drive is part of Union Gospel Mission’s annual “Operation Overcoat” clothing give away event. Operation Overcoat takes place Saturday September 27 where thousands of articles of clothing are distributed to people in need.
Underwear and hygiene items are critically needed items. During past Operation Overcoat events, underwear and hygiene items go very quickly.
“We generally are able to meet the needs of outerwear for people at the Mission, but underwear and hygiene items are a critical need. We run out of them so quickly and have to turn many people who need these items away,” said Bill Russell, Union Gospel Mission’s Executive Director.
