An addiction recovery community
LifeChange
profile: Kim Johnston
Kim
used and sold meth and was an alcoholic for many years.
Four years ago, she was drunk and homeless on the streets when
a police car picked her up and took her to a hospital, where she
detoxed while still drinking vodka she had snuck into
her hospital room.
When she was
discharged from the hospital she took a taxi ride to Union Gospel
Mission and became part of the LifeChange program. Kim lived and
worked at Union Gospel Mission. Kim held various job positions
at Union Gospel Mission and the thrift store, plus she worked
through the issues that led to her addiction. Kim, like all LifeChange
residents, took academic and Bible study classes in addition to
working full time.
During her
years of addiction, Kim became estranged from her family, she
recalls, One of the only times I really cried in LifeChange
was writing to my family. I was afraid of rejection for all that
I had done.
Today, Kim
is working, healthy and enjoys a restored relationship with her
family, and spending time with her first grandchild.
What
is LifeChange?
LifeChange
is a community. Each member of LifeChange lives and works together
at the Mission. The cornerstone of LifeChange is faith in the
transforming power of Jesus Christ. LifeChange is a peer-based,
each resident helps each other to identify issues and grow in
their recovery. LifeChange is self-governed, as residents work
together to make decisions as a community. LifeChange is long-term,
and goal oriented. Most residents spend two to four years
to complete LifeChange.
